Ibn Mas‘ud narrated: Allah’s messenger said that if anyone is afflicted by a lot of stress he should say the following:
“O Allah, I am Your slave, and the son of Your male slave, and the son of your female slave. My forelock is in Your Hand (i.e. you have complete & total control over me). Your Judgment is fulfilling itself in me, and Your Decree concerning me is absolutely just. I ask You by every Name by which You have called Yourself, and every name that You have revealed in Your Book, every name that You have taught any one of Your creation, and any names that You have kept hidden in Your own vast unseen knowledge, that You make the Qur'an the spring rain of my heart, and the light of my chest, that it dispels my sadness & grief [over what has passed], and removes any of my worry [about the future] or anxiety [about the present].”
And no one ever says this without God removing his grief and replacing it with joy.
The following is a transcription of the opening dua frequently recited by one of my teachers, Shaykh Abul-Huda Muhammad al-Yaqoubi:
All praises are due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and may Allah’s prayers and salutations be upon our master and guardian Muhammad, the seal of Prophets and leader of the Messengers and upon his entire family and companions. O Allah grant us an opening & breakthrough like that of gnostics, and grant us the success of righteous, and benefit us, O Allah with the Qurʾan and the Remembrance of Wisdom.
O Allah teach us from that which benefits us, and benefit us with that which you have taught us and increase us in knowledge that brings us closer to You, through your mercy, O most Lovingly Merciful of the merciful. O Allah, nothing is easy except that which you have made easy, and you O eternally living and upstanding with the affairs of everything make that which is grievous, if you willed, easy.
O Allah, guard us from the evils within ourselves and the fault of our deeds, and rectify all of our affairs. There is no God but you, we seek Your forgiveness and repent to you, and may Allah’s prayers be upon our master Muhammad and upon his household and companions, all of them.
